Working offline

Use Fieldguide without an internet connection

Overview

For the optimal experience with Fieldguide, you'll need to be connected to the internet. But we understand that sometimes there are situations that require you to work offline. Here are some tips on working when you have no Wi-Fi connection.

Before you begin

The Fieldguide app is not available without an internet connection. Keep this in mind when planning to work offline.

Sheets offline

There are two ways to edit sheet data offline:

  • Before you go offline, use the sheet export utility to download a copy of your sheet. You can edit the file in Excel while you're offline. Once you're back online, copy your data from Excel and bulk paste it into your sheet (up to 100 cells). When pasting your offline changes back into Fieldguide, be careful not to override any data added by teammates while you were gone. You can view sheet changes to see what edits were made by others while you were offline.

  • Before you go offline, use the append utility to download a copy of your sheet. You can edit the file in Excel while you're offline. Once you're back online, you can import the append file into your sheet. The append utility will not override sheet cells with existing data. If you're worried about overriding data added by teammates, this is the best option.

Documents offline

There are two ways to edit documents offline:

  • Before you go offline, open the document in the Office desktop app. You can edit here while offline. Once you're back online, you can save normally to upload your changes to Fieldguide.

  • Before you go offline, download the document. You can edit the file locally while offline. Once you're back online, upload your file as a new document version in Fieldguide.

When saving or uploading your offline changes back into Fieldguide, be careful not to override any document versions added by teammates while you were gone. Before uploading your changes, check the document's Versions menu to avoid conflicts.

Reports offline

To edit a report offline, follow the same instructions for editing documents offline.

Editing a report offline will unlink it from Fieldguide, disabling any hotspots (if previously enabled). Avoid editing reports offline to keep its hotspots linked.
