Overview
Use the append tool to add new columns, rows, or cell data to a sheet without overwriting any existing data.
Before you begin
If your Fieldguide sheet doesn't have any existing rows, we recommend using the sheet import tool instead of the append tool.
The append tool can be used to fill existing blank cells in your sheet, but it can't be used to overwrite cells that are already populated. To overwrite existing data in a sheet, try one of these options:
Bulk paste data into your sheet from Excel.
Export, delete, then re-import your sheet.
After downloading your append template, delete existing cell data from your Fieldguide sheet. Then, your populated import file can be uploaded to populate blank cells.
Steps
Download the append template
In your sheet, navigate to: Utilities > Append sheet data > Download template. The template will include all text, number, and list columns from your sheet and any existing data within them.
Prepare the import file
Open your template in Excel and add your data. You can add new columns, rows, and data to empty cells in the file. The sections below contain more information on formatting. Save your file in .csv or .xlsx format.
Formatting columns
Your Excel file will include your sheet's existing columns as a header in the first row. To add a new column, enter the name of that column in the first empty cell in the header row after the existing columns.
The append feature does not currently support the Control Activity column or magic columns (Tasks, Requests, Documents, and Sign Offs).
Formatting sections
Your Excel file will contain your sheet's existing sections as headers in the Key column.
Don't add data to any other cells in a section header row.
Formatting rows
To add a row, insert a new line in the Excel file. New rows will be imported in the same order as your Excel file.
Rows should not be inserted above the column header (row 1), and should not be inserted above the first section section header (row 2). New rows can be inserted anywhere after row 2.
All new rows must include data in the Key column.
Preview data and import
To append to your sheet, return to the Append sheet data menu.
