Configure agent trigger settings

Automatically run testing agents with triggers

Agent trigger settings let you choose which testing agents run automatically on a sheet when a particular event occurs. You can configure which agent runs per trigger type and sheet inside an engagement.

Before you begin

  • Only Firm Admins and Firm System Admins can edit trigger settings. Other roles can view the configured settings but can't make changes.

  • The Agent Triggers menu is only visible when trigger settings have been enabled for your firm. If you don't see it, contact Fieldguide support.

  • Individual trigger types can also be enabled or disabled for your firm independently. If a specific trigger option isn't available in the configuration menu, contact Fieldguide support to have it enabled.

  • For background on what each trigger type does, see Agent trigger types.

How trigger settings work

Each trigger setting maps a trigger, an agent, and a sheet: when the trigger fires on that sheet, the specified agent runs.

Trigger settings control which agents run on your engagement. Without any trigger settings configured, Fieldguide can't reliably match the right agent to the right sheet, and agents may run in ways that don't reflect your workflow. For consistent, predictable results, configure trigger settings for every engagement.

Once any trigger settings are configured for an engagement, the behavior changes: only sheets with an explicit trigger setting will trigger. Sheets with no trigger setting configured will not trigger at all. This applies to all trigger types across the entire engagement, not just the ones you've configured settings for.

This means that if you configure trigger settings for some sheets but not others, the unconfigured sheets will stop triggering automatically. If you want agents to trigger on every sheet, you must add a trigger setting for each one.

Preparer sign-offs pause auto-triggers. If a preparer has signed off on a row, all auto-triggers are paused for that row until the sign-off is lifted. Manual agent runs still work normally. Automatic triggers become eligible on the row again after a reviewer requests changes or the sign-off is removed.

Add a trigger configuration

To add a trigger configuration, follow these steps:

  1. In the engagement, go to Engagement Settings > Agents.

  2. Click Edit inside the Trigger Configurations section, and then click + Add Trigger.

  3. In the new row, select a Trigger, an Agent, and a Sheet.

  4. Click Save Changes.

Repeat to add configurations for additional trigger and sheet combinations.

Assign multiple agents to the same trigger and sheet

You can assign more than one agent to the same trigger and sheet combination. When the trigger fires, the system automatically selects the right agent for each row based on whether the row contains sample data: it runs the General Testing Agent for rows without samples, and the Sample Testing Agent for rows that have samples.

This lets a single trigger setting cover a sheet where some rows require sample testing and others don't without needing separate configurations.

To do this, add a second row with the same trigger and sheet, and select the second agent.

Delete a trigger configuration

To delete a trigger configuration, follow these steps:

  1. In the engagement, go to Engagement Settings > Agents.

  2. Click Edit.

  3. Click the delete icon on the row you want to remove, and confirm.
