Overview
Control keys are used as unique identifiers for the controls in a client's library. Control numbers can be set manually or automatically.
This page covers numbering control keys. For information on numbering sheet row keys, see here instead.
Set control keys automatically
When you import controls into Fieldguide, your controls will be numbered automatically if you have not manually added any keys to your import file. The automatic convention is {first letter of the client name}-{number starting at 1}. For example, the controls for "ABC Company" would follow the pattern A-1, A-2, A-3, and so on.
Set control keys manually
To manually set control keys, import your controls and populate the Key column in your import file. We suggest a similar numbering pattern to the automatic sequence described in the previous section of this article. You can use alpha-numeric characters along with decimals or hyphens as separators, e.g. 101, 102, 103 or A.1, A.2, A.3 or Z-1, Z-2, Z-3.
Edit a control key
To change a control key for a control, open the control > click the pencil icon ✏️ next to the key, then enter the new key.
Change prefix
If your controls were automatically numbered, they will contain a prefix before the number. You can change the prefix for multiple controls using the bulk edit menu.
Renumber controls to close gaps
As you add and remove controls throughout the engagement lifecycle, you may find the numbering gets off track. In the Controls menu, open the 3-dots menu and select Renumber controls. This will automatically correct the control numbering and close any gaps between numbers.
