The Fieldguide MCP server lets users in your firm ask Microsoft Copilot questions about their Fieldguide data. MCP stands for Model Context Protocol, a standard that lets AI tools connect to other systems.
⠀
Copilot Studio is a separate Microsoft product for building agents. To set up the connection, a System Admin enables the integration in Fieldguide, creates a Copilot Studio agent that connects to Fieldguide, publishes the agent, and shares it with users. Users then open the agent in Microsoft Copilot.
⠀
Before you begin
To set up the connection, make sure you have the following:
The Fieldguide MCP available for your firm. If Fieldguide MCP doesn't appear under Integrations in your Fieldguide settings, see Availability in Set up and use the Fieldguide MCP.
A Fieldguide account with the System Admin role, to enable the integration and select its scopes.
Access to Copilot Studio with permission to create and edit agents.
For each user, a Fieldguide account and a Microsoft 365 account with access to Microsoft Copilot.
⠀
Step 1: Enable Microsoft Copilot Studio in Fieldguide
A Fieldguide System Admin completes this step. To enable the integration and choose what the agent can access, follow these steps:
In Fieldguide, go to Settings > Integrations > Fieldguide MCP.
On the Available tab, find the Microsoft Copilot Studio card and click Enable. Fieldguide opens the Enable Microsoft Copilot Studio dialog.
Under Select scopes, select the scopes that the agent can access. For what scopes are and how to choose them, see Scopes in Set up and use the Fieldguide MCP. You must select at least one scope. To select every scope, click Select all.
Click Continue. Fieldguide opens the Configure Copilot Studio dialog.
Leave the Configure Copilot Studio dialog open. You copy values from it in the next steps, and you finish enabling the integration in step 4.
Step 2: Create an agent and add the MCP server
In Copilot Studio, create an agent and add the Fieldguide MCP server to it as a tool. To add the server, follow these steps (or see Microsoft's instructions Add a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server to your agent as a tool):
In Copilot Studio, create a new agent and enter a name for it, such as
Fieldguide.
In the agent's tools, add a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server. Copilot Studio opens the Add MCP server dialog.
In Server name, enter a name for the server, such as
Fieldguide MCP.In Server description, enter a description of the server, such as
Access Fieldguide data.In Server URL, paste the MCP URL from the Fieldguide Configure Copilot Studio dialog. To copy it, click the copy icon next to MCP URL.
⠀
Step 3: Configure OAuth authentication
The Fieldguide MCP server uses OAuth 2.0 to connect. In Copilot Studio, you enter the OAuth values that Fieldguide generated in the Configure Copilot Studio dialog. Each Fieldguide value goes in a matching Copilot Studio field:
Fieldguide value | Copilot Studio field |
Client ID | Client ID |
Client Secret | Client secret |
Authorization URL | Authorization URL |
Token URL | Token URL |
Refresh URL | Refresh token URL |
Scopes | Scopes |
To configure authentication, follow these steps:
For Authentication, select OAuth 2.0. For Configuration type, select Manual.
Copy each value from the Fieldguide dialog and paste it into the matching Copilot Studio field, as shown in the preceding table.
Add the server. Copilot Studio shows Save your redirect URL.
⠀
Step 4: Save the redirect URL in Fieldguide
In this step you switch from Copilot Studio back to Fieldguide. Copilot Studio generates a redirect URL that Fieldguide must allow. To save it in Fieldguide, follow these steps:
In Fieldguide, click Continue. Fieldguide opens Add Copilot callback.
In Copilot Studio, under Save your redirect URL, copy the Redirect URL.
In Fieldguide, paste the URL into Callback URLs.
Click Add. Fieldguide lists the URL.
Click Enable. Fieldguide moves Microsoft Copilot Studio to the Enabled tab.
In Copilot Studio, continue to the connection step.
⠀
Step 5: Create and authorize the connection
To connect Copilot Studio to your Fieldguide account, follow these steps:
In Copilot Studio, create a new connection. Copilot Studio opens a sign-in window.
Sign in to your Fieldguide account, and accept the access that Fieldguide requests. Fieldguide shows the Authorize App page.
Finish adding the server. Copilot Studio adds the Fieldguide MCP server to the agent's tools.
After you add the server, Microsoft Copilot Studio appears as Active on the Enabled tab in Fieldguide, and the server appears in the agent's Tools section.
⠀
Step 6: Publish the agent
Publishing makes the agent available in the channel that you choose. It doesn't give any users access to the agent yet. You share the agent in step 7. To publish the agent, follow these steps:
Optional: To test the connection first, use Preview to ask the agent a question.
Add the Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Teams channel, and under Availability, select Microsoft Copilot and Microsoft Teams.
Publish the agent. Publishing can take several minutes. Wait for Your agent published successfully before you continue.
Step 7: Share the agent with users
To let users access the agent, share it with them using a link. For Microsoft's instructions, including sharing with specific people or security groups, see Share agents with other users. To share the agent and copy the link, follow these steps:
In Copilot Studio, click Share. Copilot Studio opens the sharing dialog.
Change the audience permission to End user access. For example, set Everyone in your organization to End user access. To limit access, add specific people or groups instead.
Click Share. Copilot Studio shows Agent shared successfully.
In the Agent shared successfully dialog, click the dropdown arrow beside Copy link, and select Microsoft Copilot. Copilot Studio copies the link to the Microsoft Copilot version of the agent.
Send the link to the users who need access.
⠀
Use the agent in Microsoft Copilot
After an admin shares the link, each user can ask the agent questions. To use the agent, follow these steps:
Open the agent link in your browser.
In Microsoft Copilot, start a new chat and select the Fieldguide agent. It has the name that your admin gave the agent.
Enter a question about your Fieldguide data, such as
How many engagements do I have?, and press Enter. The agent returns an answer using data from Fieldguide.
For more example prompts, and for guidance on prompts that post comments or create engagements, see Set up and use the Fieldguide MCP.
⠀
Troubleshoot agent access
The first time you open the agent link, Microsoft Copilot might show an error, and the agent might not appear in your list of agents right away. You might need to refresh and try again more than once after the admin first publishes the agent. If the agent doesn't open on the first try, follow these steps:
Click Try again.
Open Agents and refresh the page if the agent doesn't appear.
Click New chat, and select the Fieldguide agent before you enter your question.
